Breastfeeding & the Nervous System: Regulation for Mother and Baby

Breastfeeding & the Nervous System: Regulation for Mother and Baby is a professional workshop for maternal mental health providers that explores feeding through an attachment-based, nervous system–informed lens. Participants will learn how stress, sensory sensitivities, trauma history, and neurodivergent nervous systems can shape breastfeeding experiences for both mother and infant. This training offers practical co-regulation strategies and clinical language shifts to reduce shame and move away from performance-based feeding support. Clinicians will leave with compassionate, neurodivergent-affirming tools to support regulation, attachment, and maternal self-trust during feeding challenges.

🙋🏽‍♀️ Who is this workshop for?

  • Mental Health & Perinatal Professionals: Deepen your understanding of how neurodiversity, trauma, and the nervous system can influence breastfeeding and feeding experiences.

  • Birthworkers, Lactation & Healthcare Providers: Expand your clinical toolkit with strategies to support regulation and provide compassionate, trauma-informed care for feeding families.

  • Infant & Family Support Professionals: Learn approaches that promote connection, co-regulation, and a deeper understanding of the parent-infant feeding relationship.

💜 What is the workshop about?

Breastfeeding is more than a feeding method- it is a relationship shaped by the nervous systems of both mother and baby. This workshop explores breastfeeding through an attachment-based, nervous system-informed lens, examining how stress, trauma, sensory sensitivities, and neurodivergence can influence feeding experiences. Attendees will leave with practical, compassionate strategies to support regulation, strengthen attachment, and foster maternal self-trust while moving beyond performance-based approaches to feeding support.

This workshop will explore:

  • The nervous system and breastfeeding, including how stress, trauma history, sensory sensitivities, and neurodivergence can influence feeding experiences for both mother and infant.

  • Attachment and co-regulation, with practical strategies to support emotional regulation, strengthen the parent-infant relationship, and create a more connected feeding experience.

  • Trauma-informed, neurodivergent-affirming clinical approaches, including compassionate language shifts and practical tools that reduce shame and support families through breastfeeding challenges.
