Supporting Survivors During the Perinatal Period: Understanding Intimate Partner Violence and Coercive Control
Join Andrea Sheth, LCSW-R, for this workshop that will address the needs of supporting survivors of intimate partner violence and coercive control in the therapy setting. It will also look at the specific effects of those across the perinatal population. Materials and resources will be shared that illustrate the cycle of violence, the different types of abuse, and the dynamics of coercive control. Case examples will also be discussed about recognizing and addressing the various needs of survivors and the different approaches that can be taken to assist survivors in their process towards healing.

This workshop explores how intimate partner violence and coercive control uniquely affect individuals during the perinatal period. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics of abuse, its impact on pregnancy and postpartum experiences, and trauma-informed approaches to recognizing, supporting, and empowering survivors on their path toward healing.
This workshop will explore:
The dynamics of intimate partner violence and coercive control, including the cycle of violence, different forms of abuse, and how coercive control can impact a survivor's safety, autonomy, and well-being.
The unique effects of intimate partner violence across the perinatal population, including the emotional, physical, and psychological challenges survivors may face during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.
Trauma-informed strategies for supporting survivors, using case examples, practical resources, and compassionate approaches to recognizing survivors' needs and helping them access pathways toward healing.

✨ [ABOUT THE PRESENTER] ✨
Andrea Sheth, LCSW-R, is a licensed clinical social worker working with survivors of trauma for over 24 years. This includes a wide range of survivors including pregnant women and mothers. She has worked in a NYC Emergency Department assisting survivors of rape, sexual assault and intimate partner violence. She has extensive clinical experiences helping survivors begin their long journeys of healing and worked for several years in a specific hospital based program that addressed the connection between substance use and trauma. She currently sees individuals in her private practice with a specific focus on providing long-term trauma focused treatment to survivors as well as to those across the perinatal population.
