Perinatal and Postpartum: Mental Health for Birth Workers
Presented by Maizee Devlin, MSW, LCSW, PDP
This workshop will provide education on PMADS and equip birth workers with tools to best support their clients and families in the perinatal and postpartum period.
By the end of the presentation, participants should be able to
Understand the spectrum of perinatal mental health disorders, including how to distinguish between common emotional changes (baby blues) and clinically significant conditions like postpartum depression, anxiety, and psychosis.
Recognize early signs and risk factors for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) to provide timely, supportive responses.
Communicate with empathy and provide trauma-informed care, respecting clients’ emotional needs and cultural backgrounds.
Understand the importance of discussing postpartum support during the perinatal period and learn how to develop a comprehensive postpartum plan with clients.
Advocate for mental health awareness and reduce stigma in perinatal care settings and client communities and know when and how to refer clients to mental health professionals and resources.
Whether you are a maternal health professional, mental health provider, or patient yourself, you will walk away from this workshop with a sense of empowerment and practical strategies.

✨ [ABOUT THE PRESENTER] ✨
Maizee Devlin is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Perinatal Doula Professional, professor and maternal mental health advocate with a commitment to supporting individuals and families through all stages of the perinatal experience. She holds a Master of Social Work with a Certificate in Integrated Healthcare and brings years of professional experience in both clinical and community-based settings.
Her background includes medical social work within Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs), as well as outpatient OBGYN settings, where she supported patients and families navigating complex medical and emotional challenges. Inspired by her own personal journey with pregnancy and postpartum, Maizee opened her own private therapy practice, Mpower Mental Health LLC, which is focused exclusively on maternal mental health and perinatal emotional wellbeing.
In addition to her clinical work, she serves as a birth doula, providing holistic, trauma-informed support to birthing people. She is also an adjunct faculty member at the Community College of Allegheny County, where she teaches social work courses.
Maizee is proud to serve on the Board of Directors for Pittsburgh Bereavement Doulas, a Pittsburgh, PA nonprofit dedicated to offering immediate and ongoing bereavement care and support, at no cost, to families experiencing pregnancy or infant loss.
With a unique blend of clinical expertise, lived experience, and a passion for advocacy, Maizee is committed to reshaping how we care for birthing people and their families.
